Everyday, millions of people get behind the wheel to drive to work, school, or just run errands. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2014 nearly 10,000 people died in automobile accidents involving an intoxicated driver, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. With so many drunk driving related fatalities, it begs the question, just how common is drunk driving and how many drunk driving arrests are made?
In 2014, over one million people were arrested for driving under the influence in the United States. Despite this staggering number, this accounted for only 1% of all self-reported drunk driving incidents. That means approximately 99% of drivers operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol are not caught by the police. While people of all ages are at risk for drunk driving, there are some who are more at risk than others.
Young people are most at risk for drunk driving. Among drivers with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit involved in fatal crashes in 2014, three out of every ten drivers were between the ages of 21 and 24 years old.
Motorcyclists are also at an increased risk in drunk driving accidents because motorcycles offer very little protection when involved in a crash. Nearly one-third of all motorcycle accident deaths involve a driver with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
Drivers with previous DUI convictions are the most likely to drink and drive again. Intoxicated drivers involved in fatal crashes were seven times more likely to have had a prior DUI conviction than drivers with no alcohol in their system.
Teenagers are also at a dramatically increased risk of death when driving under the influence. Drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 are seventeen times more likely to die in an auto accident than drivers who have not been drinking.
There is no excuse for a driver getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. It puts the driver, and more importantly other motorists at an extreme risk for injury and even death.
