Despite the fact that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, this month has been a particularly deadly month on Texas roads. Several incidents of wrong-way crashes have been reported, many of which were in Houston. Unfortunately, most of these incidents were caused by drunk drivers, leaving Houstonians with questions as to what more we can do to prevent the increasing number of wrong-way crashes and drunk driving behavior this year.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, roughly 3% of highway crashes are wrong-way accidents. Sadly, Texas outranks most other states in the number of wrong-way crashes occurring in the U.S. Within the past five years, approximately 400 people have died after being involved in a wrong-way crash, and more than 3,500 have been injured. In most cases with wrong-way accidents, drunk drivers are the culprits. To make matters worse, the majority of wrong-way crashes occur on highways, making them even more deadly due to higher speeds and more cars on the road.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), certain steps are being taken in order to increase safety and address the issues of both wrong-way and drunk driving accidents. Things like adding more signage on on-ramps and off-ramps, lowering existing signage to make it more visible while driving, adding flashing signs and red pavement reflectors to roads are being put in place to grab the attention of intoxicated or confused drivers and help them realize they are driving in the wrong direction.
Sadly, drunk driving is not such a rare occurrence in the state of Texas and is one of the leading causes of accidents and deaths on Texas roads. These accidents are completely preventable, which makes it even more heartbreaking when they occur.
All Texas drivers have an obligation to safely and responsibly operate their vehicle without being under the influence, yet this obligation is ignored too often in our state. If you or a loved one was a victim of a wrong-way or drunk driving accident, we want to help. Contact the car accident attorneys at Adame Garza LLP to get the compensation and help you deserve.
