At this point, there is no denying the dangers that come with electric scooters. Despite growing risks and potential injuries, scooter use as a mode of transportation continues to rise in popularity across many cities in the U.S. With the rapid increase of scooter users comes a rapid increase in reported injuries while riding. In fact, a recent study performed by the CDC found half of all e-scooter injuries in Austin were considered “severe.”
The CDC and Austin health department reviewed data, which revealed the most common severe scooter injuries ranged from bone fractures to severe bleeding after taking a fall or being hit. The study also revealed an estimated 20 injuries per 100,000 trips. To make matters worse, the majority of riders do not wear helmets, increasing the risk for potentially serious harm.
In another study published by Consumer Reports, it was revealed that in the short time since e-scooters were released to the public in 2017, at least 1,500 riders across the country have been injured. In addition to those injuries, there have also been four tragic fatalities.
The growing use of e-scooters has become a grave concern for many because of the sheer number of accidents and injuries that have come with it. E-scooter injuries are not just scrapes and cuts – they include legitimate fractures and traumatic brain injuries.
According to the CDC study in Austin, the severe injuries sustained by riders included:
While it would seem most likely these injuries transpired on busy roads downtown, that was only the case for 55% of reported injury accidents. One-third (33%) of riders were injured while riding on sidewalks, and eight riders were injured in an area where cars were not even allowed to drive, leaving many to wonder if there is a safe place to ride at all.
Unfortunately it seems as though the trend of riding electric scooters in populous cities is not slowing down anytime soon.
