Though summer may be coming to a close this month, drunk driving is something we should always be aware of, no matter the time of year. Annually, the Houston Police Department, along with other local and area law enforcement agencies, partners with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to look out for drunk drivers and help everyone get home safely. This high-visibility national enforcement campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” runs from August 17 through September 3, 2018. During this period, local law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk driving.
Drunk driving often leads to severe accidents, as impaired drivers can drive in the wrong direction on one-way streets, cross the median of an interstate, and/or engage in a number of dangerous driving behaviors, such as speeding.
According to NHTSA, around 10,497 people died in the United States in 2016 in drunk driving related crashes, making up almost a third of all traffic fatalities. Of those, 161 people were killed over Labor Day Weekend in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.
In 2012 alone, over 10,000 alcohol-related traffic fatalities occurred, according to NHTSA; and, in 2016 more than one million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. That’s one percent of the 111 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year.
With this information in mind, it’s important to know the safety steps to take to avoid engaging in drunk or impaired driving. For instance, before drinking always make sure you are with someone staying sober who can be your designated driver, don’t allow any of your friends to drive if they appear to be impaired, if you’ve been drinking or using substances find a ride home, use a ride share service, or call a taxi.
