In most major cities, having transportation and knowing how to navigate from point A to point B are essential. However, traffic safety concerns often limit the ability of city residents to move around as they please, especially those who rely on walking, biking, or public transit. This is a major concern for Houston in particular, where all categories of vehicle-related crashes have been steadily increasing.
Houston currently has around 500 miles of bikeways, but only about 260 of those miles are considered high-comfort facilities where cyclists can ride either on designated trails or along dedicated space on the street. According to a recent report done by Kinder, crashes and near-miss incidents have happened mostly in areas the Houston Bike Plan identifies as places that need either short-term retrofits or longer term projects. Kinder estimated about 60 percent of bicycle-involved crashes between 2009 and 2015 happened less than one mile from streets designated for long-term future projects and approximately 22 percent of these crashes were along those designated for short-term retrofit projects.
Short-term retrofits are low-cost, quick solutions to improve safety in areas heavily traveled by those riding bicycles. Longer-term projects include the accomplishment of connected bikeways in Houston.
The study done by Kinder points to the potential need for infrastructure changes in order to solve this growing problem. Our surroundings and common distractions, such as smart phones, GPS, and other passengers in the vehicle, play a significant role in amplifying the human error that often leads to traffic crashes. Not only that, but the overall lack of adequate pedestrian and bicycle lanes can lead non-vehicle users to believe they do not have as much of a right to public streets as drivers.
With this in mind, it’s important for Houston drivers to follow traffic laws and not engage in any of the following negligent actions:
