Houstonians that have tried to walk or bike around the city are already aware of the dangerous “car culture” that most drivers exhibit. Drivers are not friendly to pedestrians or bicyclists even if they have the right of way. In an attempt to better understand the dangers faced by pedestrians, the City of Houston is conducting an audit to identify the most problematic intersections.
LINK Houston, a transportation advocacy group, is working with Bike Houston to perform an in-depth road safety audit, estimated to take about a week’s time. According to the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, a typical road safety audit involves the examination of existing or future intersections by a multidisciplinary team. After examination, the team then reports on potential safety concerns and identifies opportunities for improvement on the roads with local pedestrians and cyclists in mind.
Those performing the audit will also take into account traffic numbers, what times of the day most accidents are taking place, and how pedestrians and cyclists in Houston are using the roadways, light signals, and crosswalks.
The road safety audit is important in order for the City of Houston to better function as a safe city for all roadway users. The primary responsibility, however, remains with Houston drivers to operate their vehicles safely and be on high alert for pedestrians or cyclists while driving. The audit could not come at a better time, as pedestrian accidents across the country continue to increase each year.
